An Oasis in the Busy City

An Oasis in the Busy City

by Engel Architecten

This 17th-century canal house in Amsterdam was transformed into a refined home that balances historic character with contemporary comfort. Only three metres wide but exceptionally deep, the layout required careful planning of circulation and custom-built furniture to make the most of every square metre. A former kitchen extension was reimagined to create a small courtyard, bringing light and air into the heart of the house. Walnut furniture, marble surfaces and herringbone oak flooring, inspired by Japanese design, give the interior a warm, tactile quality.

Behind the restored 19th-century façade, the house tells a layered story: built around 1620, rebuilt in 1867 and again altered around 1900, it later housed a radio shop before becoming a private residence in the 1960s. That history remains tangible in the proportions and details throughout.

The owners, formerly living beside the open water of the IJ, sought the buzz of the city centre instead. A window desk overlooking the canal has become one of the home's favourite spots, offering a front-row view of daily life passing by.

Custom joinery and furniture, many pieces made in solid walnut, were designed specifically for the narrow floor plan. Japanese craftsmanship, inspired by the Amsterdam store Time & Style, informed the choice of materials and the quiet, considered detailing found throughout the interior.
