MG House

by stats architecten

In the historic center of Schiedam, stats architecten designed a striking villa as part of the Plantagewerf development, a cluster of six houses on a former industrial waterfront site. The design stands out for its dynamic massing: three rectangular floors twisted at the corners to create a spatial, panoramic experience. Wood, metal and glass give the exterior a maritime yet industrial character, while large glazed corners merge the interior with the surrounding greenery and harbor views.

Inside, an open floor plan meets an extensive book collection through a full-height bookcase spanning all three levels. Starting in the entrance hall, where it conceals the wardrobe and utility meter, the case guides visitors up a staircase that winds between shelves and a wall of cast-in-place concrete.

Along the way, the route opens onto spectacular views and sightlines, framed by a semi-enclosed balcony and a glazed corner at the dining area. The house forms part of a larger ensemble of villas within the Plantagewerf, each conceived as an individual expression within a shared green setting, with this residence marking the most radical departure into modern spatial expression.
