Dune House III

Dune House III

by Marc Koehler Associates

Dune House III is a timber-clad holiday home nestled among the coastal dunes, designed by Marc Koehler Architects. Its sculptural, introverted form bends to carve out a sheltered outdoor niche while directing two strategically placed windows toward the surrounding views. The untreated timber cladding will weather naturally, allowing the house to blend further into the dune landscape over time. The result is a quiet, monolithic volume that feels shaped by the wind and sand around it.

Set low in the dunes, the house reads as a single folded roof form rather than a conventional building, its angled timber planes echoing the shifting profile of the surrounding landscape. A large glazed opening on the ground floor opens onto a sunken terrace, offering shelter from coastal winds while framing views of the grasses and horizon beyond.

Inside, the simplicity of the exterior continues, with timber surfaces and a restrained material palette creating a calm, cabin-like atmosphere. A chimney rises discreetly from the ridge, marking the presence of a hearth within.

Over time, the cedar cladding will silver and weather, deepening the connection between architecture and site. The house stands as a quiet companion to its earlier sibling, Dune House I, extending the architects' exploration of houses shaped by their natural surroundings.
