Poolhouse

Poolhouse

by Van der Heijden Architecten

Set within the historic gardens of Huys Basten Asbeck in Groenlo, this poolhouse was designed with great care for its surroundings. Raised on a plateau, the pavilion protects the archaeologically valuable soil and appears to float above the ancient garden. Two volumes are linked by a single sweeping roof plane, creating a covered terrace that opens onto the pool. Dark timber cladding and expansive glazing let the structure recede quietly into the park-like landscape while framing views of the garden.

The design is directly aligned with the historical surroundings: centuries-old trees and the existing garden structure determined the placement and modest size of the pavilion. By elevating the volume, the ground remains untouched and both landscape and archaeological values are respected.

The covered outdoor space connects the two enclosed volumes and offers shelter without breaking the relationship with the swimming pool and lawn. Large glass corners allow indoor and outdoor spaces to merge into one another, while the flat, continuous roof and dark wooden facade give the building a restrained appearance.
